Giants Causeway

44 Causeway Road, Bushmills, Co. Antrim Tel: 028 2079 1855

This is the most recognised sight on the Causeway Coast with its astonishing basalt columns packed together, forming "stepping stones", leading from the cliff foot and disappearing into the sea. According to legend this was the road built by the giant Finn Mac Cool to enable him to fight the Scottish giant on the other side of the water.

There are about 38,000 of the stone columns, which were formed about 60 million years ago by molten lava from a vast volcanic eruption that formed the Antrim plateau. The Visitors Centre explains the geological enigma of the Causeway and other mythical legends associated with it. A minibus service runs every 15 minutes from the Visitor Centre to the Grand Causeway.

A 12-minute audiovisual show explores the origins of the Giant's Causeway through local folklore and scientific theory. Spectacular aerial views of the beautiful Causeway Coast & Glens area, with commentary available in 5 European languages. (Auditorium seats 60).

There is a coastal path, about 8km long, which runs from the entrance of the Causeway to beyond Dunseverick, near Whitepark Bay. The sheer cliffs, rising to over 90m, form a series of bays, and are part of the attraction of the Causeway.
